Effectively Using our Brain Technology
by Grace McGartland
As seen in Words of Mouth!Brainpower remains our most precious resource. To see new
opportunities we need our brain technology to function as an integrated whole that draws
on the strengths of both the right and left hemispheres.
Our Right Brain - The Expansive
Mind
Buckminster Fuller, inventor of the geodesic dome, invited us to use our intuition and
go "cosmic fishing" - to move deeply into the right side of our brains, expand
our thoughts there, and allow them to incubate. Heres how and why it works:
- Subconscious awareness
:
when you have been consciously striving to create an idea, your subconscious is always
aware.
- Random selection:
your subconscious is constantly sorting and sifting data.
- Generation of solutions
:
minutes, hours, or even days after you have stopped mulling over a particular problem, the
solution emerges from the recesses of your right brain right out of your mouth!
Our Left Brain: The Computing Mind
The computing mind assumes responsibility for the more analytical functions only when
exploration and development of the right side are completed. When the left side kicks in,
this is what happens:
- Sequential patterning
:
thoughts come one after the other, creating a routine or regular way of acting or doing.
- Systematic application
:
in a predictable fashion, thoughts are applied through continued effort.
- Linear execution
:
thoughts are judged by pre-established boundaries of point-to-point thinking.
Corpus Callosum: The Bridge That
Keeps the Balance
The corpus callosum functions as the chief communicator, connecting the two
hemispheres. It is the power link, unifying attention and awareness to allow the two sides
of the brain to share learning and memory. Striking this balance produces:
- Synergy:
the combined action of the whole is worth more than the sum of all parts.
- Energy:
that nurtures each halfs activity without hindering the progress of the whole.
- Power:
is released when the brain halves work in unison, with direction.
