Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
BRAIN TRANSFORMERS

What is it? This technique provides a way to change perspectives in order to see different sides of a problem or situation.

Why is it important? An outside perspective can suggest a multitude of solutions you might not otherwise encounter. It can stimulate controversy and raise "sticky" questions that lead to a flurry of possibilities.

How do I do it?

  1. Ask the group to decide whose perspective they will take on. Instead of being team leaders, perhaps they could be first-day-on-the-job clerical staff members. Or ask them to take on the perspective of a customer or supplier.

  2. Ask questions that are guaranteed to flip everyone's perspective. For example, "What could we do to get our customers really angry?" "Instead of cutting costs, how could we make sure we go over budget this month?"

  3. List all the responses, allowing any answers provided.

  4. Look at the "negative" answers and see if you can "flip" them to a positive solution or idea. Look at the principle behind the negative response to create an appropriate possibility.

  5. Capture all of the unique ideas and turn them into solid action.

What are some ways to use this TNT? This is an excellent technique to use for really difficult situations. Instead of tackling an issue head-on, go for the opposite. Plan out all the reasons that your new product could fail. Then ask yourselves, "What is the idea behind this?" and turn that idea into a positive. You'll be amazed at the unique ideas you come up with!
