Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
THE BIRTH OF BUN HUGGERS
What is it? This is a powerful exercise for getting your team to shift its thinking
paradigms as they head into a session for generating breakthrough solutions.
Why is it important? You need new thinking in order to get new ideas, and you need to signal to
your team that yesterday's solutions just won't do. This technique will challenge their
thinking and force them to stretch.
How do I do it?
Present your team with this challenge:
redesigning panty hose for the male consumer. You can get panty hose samples from a
lingerie shop and give them to your team to help authenticate the experience.
Ask the team a series of questions to
facilitate the development of this new product, such as: who is our target market? What do
panty hose for men look like? What's the application for this product? How do we package
it? What is our product's name?
Have the team generate as many concrete
ideas as possible for each question.
Then, have them draw a prototype of the new
product and its packaging.
Review the ideas together and look for the
breakthrough ideas. One team we worked with came up with a product called Bun Huggers,
sold to retired athletes who may have poor circulation or sagging muscle tone.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? This is a marvelous way to kick off a marketing or
product development think tank. It pushes the team to significantly stretch themselves to
the limit. It's also a great technique to use when energy is low and there is a lack of
new ideas.
