Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
BREAKING
THROUGH CONDITIONED RESPONSES
What is it? This technique is a good way to demonstrate just how
stuck in our conditioned responses we are, and how easily we slip into old patterns.
Why is it important? It helps you recondition your group's brains so you can move more quickly
to action and then to viable solutions, though becoming aware of conditioned responses.
How do I do it?
Make a list of well-known commercial slogans
that your group could quickly identify, leaving the end of the tagline out (e.g., Good to
the last ______ )
Start off the meeting by reciting the incomplete slogans
and asking group members to complete them with a new ending. Because of their
conditioning, this will be almost impossible for the group to do.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? Think about all the conditioned responses people are
locked into when they attend meetings. The same people sit in the same chairs, the same
coffee ups are always used, the agenda always starts out the same way. Try changing this
routine slightly. Ask yourself if any of these alterations could serve as the beginning of
a breakthrough to alter people's usual responses, so you create a "new ending"
for your meeting.
