Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
DRAW A BRAIN
What is it? Drawing your brain gives you the jolt you need to look at yourself
differently. Many of us are not aware of our brains. Most people have never drawn their
brains, so 99% of the time this will be a first.
Why is it important? We need to ratchet up our brainpower to fully leverage our potential. When
members of a group draw their brains, they may never see themselves the same way again.
The drawings help to increase their awareness of themselves and others.
How do I do it?
As you open your next meeting, explain to
the participants that they're going to introduce themselves to each other in a new way.
Pass out blank white paper and markers of
various colors.
Ask the group members to draw pictures of
their brains; any drawing is acceptable--whether it be realistic, graphic, cartoonish.
Ask each person to write down 2-3 words that
describe his or her brain.
If you are working with a group of 10 or
fewer people, post the pictures on the wall and facilitate a group discussion about the
similarities and differences among the brains. Write down the responses and post them on
the wall as well. If you are working with a larger group, ask them to break into small
groups to have this discussion.
Finally, have the group or groups come to
some conclusions about their "collective" brain. Example: "Our brain is
serious, logical, and always busy."
Use the group's conclusions to reintroduce
the topic of the meeting, touching on how the collective brainpower will be crucial to its
success.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? Use this technique in place or ordinary
introductions to start off a meeting. It is particularly well suited to strategic planning
sessions or other types of meetings where diverse groups are charged with coming to a
common vision or decision. It is also a great technique for team building, and it is
especially powerful with groups in which many participants are unfamiliar with one
another.
