Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
THE GARBAGE BAG DUMP
What is it? This technique is a safe way to clear the air and let go of the past so
that fresh ideas can surface to move the project, group, or company forward.
Why is it important? Hanging onto old grievances only blocks and stifles us. Writing down your
complaints and then tossing them away can give you real freedom to break with the past.
How do I do it?
Pass out 3x5 cards to everyone in your
meeting.
Ask each person to write down things that
they are upset about, that bother them, about the past. Get them to do their own internal
"garbage" review and search for hidden agendas that still bother them. Let them
know that this information will not be shared.
Then, using a large garbage bag, collect all
that old stuff. Have participants tear up their cards and toss them into the bag. Then tie
a knot and throw the bag away.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? This technique is helpful with groups that have had
difficulties working together in the past. It is best to use an independent facilitator to
conduct this technique (not yourself) so that there can be bias-free perspective on the
situation.
