Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
HEAD BOWLING
What is it? This technique, first introduced at the annual meeting of an international
accounting firm, offers a new twist on the well-established phenomenon of head rolling.
Why is it important? This is a humorous way to send the message, "We're all in this
together."
How do I do it?
Use a soft toy ball on which you have drawn
an outrageous facial expression.
In your next meeting, keep track of how
often individuals submit negative input about each other's ideas, the current situation,
or other topics. At the end of the session, "bowl" the head to the person who
scored highest.
At the next meeting, have the winner keep
score and bowl the head to the next winner.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? Have a head-bowling banquet on a quarterly basis to
recognize the winners. Keep the atmosphere fun, light and positive. Use the banquet to
review how the openness and honesty in your team are positive forces, and also to remind
everyone that there are times when it is important to let ideas circulate among the team
members before they are analyzed or rejected.
