Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
IMAGE STORMING
What is it? This technique helps you expand ideas into concepts, articulate them with
specificity and concreteness...and do it quickly!
Why is it important? Thunderbolt Thinking is people-powered, working from the combined energies
of an entire team. Image storming allows you to draw on your team's collective brains. It
stresses immediate action and soliciting the help of others--a great team-building
activity.
How do I do it?
In your next thinking session, if a
participant--or even the whole group--becomes stuck, immediately have them draw any image
that comes to mind. Encourage drawings that reflect the five senses.
Have others in the group articulate the
thought behind the picture by drawing their own pictures. Remind everyone to keep their
minds open and to allow images to surface.
Ask everyone to add a few key words to their
drawings. Then link the thoughts, ideas and graphic representations together to see what
connecting threads appear.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? Drawing is a great way to communicate ideas. Images
can be assimilated very quickly, and spark discussion. Use this technique when you are
trying to develop a thematic approach or treatment, to link your organization's vision,
mission and values, or to restructure your team or organization.
