Thunderbolt Thinking Technique:
A NAME TAG IS A NAME TAG IS A NAME TAG
What is it? This technique uses the ordinary name tag in an out-of-the-ordinary way to
get participants to describe their expectations, buy-in, vision, etc., as they work
together on a project or in a session.
Why is it important? It creates immediate, active participation on everyone's part, helps
everyone in the group learn something about each other quickly, and introduces a small
disruption in thinking by allowing people to introduce themselves in a different way.
How do I do it?
Instead of using name tags just for names,
ask participants in your next thinking session to include some information that relates
uniquely to the meeting--such as a word or image they would use to describe the
organization's current status or how they plan to give life to the project.
Have the participants wear their name tags.
At an appropriate time during the meeting,
ask each participant to explain his or her name tag to the rest of the group.
What are some ways to use this
TNT? Unique name tags can be made from pre-printed
2x3" sticky notes whose messages are thematically appropriate to your meeting. Or
make your own. Try asking people to create a symbol or icon instead of writing their name
on tag, or have them complete a statement, such as "I plan to help this project lift
of by..."
